A gas boiler, whether it be a combination boiler, system boiler, condenser boiler or hot water only boiler, has a number of complex components to ensure heating and hot water is provided on demand. When you’ve got a problem with your boiler or heating system, there could be a number of problems. We’ve put together this list of the top 8 issues to give you an idea of what the issue might be.
If you are getting no heating or hot water at all, it could be a pressure issue with the boiler. This essentially means that there’s not enough water in the heating system to allow the boiler to heat the water. This could be due to a leak or a component within the boiler that’s broken or stopped working. But don’t worry, once you call us out, we’ll be able to diagnose the problem and get your heating and hot working.
If you’ve got hot water, but no heating, it could be the diverter valve. What often happens is that during the summer months when you only use hot water and no heating, the valve can fail in the winter as you start needing both hot water and heating from the boiler. Any repair we do to your boiler is to manufacturer standards and we are gas safe approved.
This could be an issue with your thermostat. The thermostat controls how warm you have your heating. Unfortunately they do break and aren’t built to last forever. However, if your heating thermostat has broken, you might want to consider replacing it with a smart thermostat like a Nest or a Hive system.
A build up of lime scale or sludge from your boiler heat exchanger can restrict the water flow causing it to boil the water. When this happens, it sometimes sounds like a boiling kettle. A simple flush might fix the problem, but you may also need a replacement heat exchanger.
If you can see the pilot light flickering or going out, the little blue flame that you can often see when looking through the inspection panel on the front of the boiler without taking the front of the boiler off, it could well be a broken thermocouple stopping the gas supply. The pilot light usually goes out when there’s a shortage of gas, so it might also be the gas supply to the boiler that’s causing the problem. When we come out to repair your boiler, we’ll make sure we check both, if this is the problem.
Your boiler may have what is called a condensate pipe, this can often look like a standard waste water or overflow pipe. If the pipe has not been insulated or is undersized it can sometimes freeze in cold weather causing your boiler to stop working. We can not only get the boiler back up and running but provide a solution to avoid it happening again.
If you are not getting heat to all your radiators it could be from a build up of sludge or air in the heating system. If you are only getting heat in the bottom of the radiator, it might need bleeding. You should only attempt this if you feel confident to bleed a radiator as you could end up scolding yourself and causing water damage to your property if you get it wrong.
Sometimes you might find that the boiler is switching itself off. This is mainly due to the safety features in-place on most modern boilers. You’ll generally find a fault code on the display if this is the case. Although most manufacturers have different codes for different issues, we’ll be able to quickly diagnose the problem and repair the issue. Fault codes can sometimes flash up on a boiler when there is low water pressure, a problem with the thermostat, or a lack of water flow due to a closed valve, air or the pump not circulating the water in the system properly.
